er vision\, or maybe even doing a PhD? In this lunch lecture\, two old AI&
amp\;ES master students and current PhD'ers will tell you more about this.
They will give you some information that you can use to
decide whether a PhD is something for you. Of course\, they will also tal
k about their own research.
Simon Penninga uses generati
ve AI techniques (diffusion models and VAEs) to create an agent that funct
ions as an \"active perceiver\" in ultrasound imaging. He uses Bayesian po
sterior belief to generate images that align with the observations to crea
te adaptive sampling schemes in real time to maximize information gain. Us
ing this he can reach subsampling levels of up to 20-fold and still reprod
uce cardiac images.
Lemar Abdi does his research in the
computer science field. He focuses on unsupervised out-of-distribution (OO
D) detection using generative models. He will also show how information-th
eoretic insights can lead to state-of-the-art performance in OOD detection
for medical images.

During the excursion\, we will see a demonstration
of one of the machines\, receive a presentation about a day in the life a

Seafarers back in the 17th to the 18th century were famous for
infusing their drinks with alcohol to allow it to be drinkable enough to
survive on the open seas. Rum was the most popular drink\, it was made in
sugar plantations around where many pirates operated\, it had a high enoug
h alcohol percentage to kill bacteria in water\, mixing it with limes gave
sailors some vitamin C\, and it was a major morale booster (I wonder why)
. For your health and safety\, it is highly recommended to drink some some
rum-infused drinks\, and even the ever-popular 'grog'\, to prevent scurvy
and get your vitamins in :).

In the excursion to the TenneT BritNed HVDC interconnector
\, we will see firsthand how electricity flows between the Netherlands and
the UK. This impressive site is all about connecting grids\, boosting rel
iability\, and making sure energy gets where it’s needed most.
On this visit\, you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at the tech
nology that makes high-voltage direct current possible\, and you’ll lear
n why it’s such a big deal for the energy transition. It’s a chance to
see how international cooperation and smart engineering come together in
one of Europe’s most advanced interconnectors.
We will meet in f
ront of Flux on February 24th at 7:45 to board the bus that will take us t
o the site. The bus trip will take roughly 2 hours. Lunch will be provided
by the company\, and the expected return time to Flux is 17:00 (may chang
e). \; The bus will leave at 8:00 so make sure to be on time!

oor ski activity February 2nd to Snowworld Landgraaf (Witte Wereld 1\, 637
2 VG Landgraaf)\, people of all skill levels are welcome to join. We will
be skiing for four hours\, including travel\, the activity takes up most o
f the day (09:00-17:00).
For this activity\, all expenses will be p
aid individually (No upfront cost\, you pay entry etc yourself). Please no
te\, this activity is a lot of fun but also quite expensive (from €28\,9
